AI-Driven Job Loss no Longer ‘Potential’ as Mass Cuts in US Firms Target Coding, Support and Administration Roles

Posted on April 27, 2026

AI is no longer “potential”—it’s the explicit justification for mass cuts in profitable firms, targeting entry-level coding, support, and admin roles.

Critics call it a “layoff trap” (companies automate or lose competitively, but collective action risks economic contraction); X discussions amplify fears of 2026 as the “white-collar recession” tipping point.

March saw 60,620 cuts (up 25% MoM), with AI the #1 cited reason (25% of announcements).

Tech led with 18,720 cuts in March and over 52,000–78,557 in Q1 2026. Companies explicitly linking cuts to AI include Oracle (thousands for AI infrastructure), Meta (up to 20% workforce), Atlassian (10%), Block (nearly 50%), Pinterest (15%), WiseTech (2,000), Crypto.com (12%), and Amazon (tens of thousands).
