My names is Charles Helms and I’d like to announce that I’m running for City Commissioner Group 5.
I was raised right here in Graceville, my mother, Ludean Toole Helms, brought us to her hometown in 1970 after my father died in an auto accident.
Growing up in Graceville I played football, worked on my uncle’s farm, worked for Piggly Wiggly and Lidden-White clothing store and was an active member of Damascus Baptist Church. I graduated from Graceville High School in 1978, enlisted in the Air Force, and married Stephanie O’Quinn, my high school sweetheart.
My Air Force career of 21 years took us to several states (bases) before spending a 10 year stretch overseas working for the Defense Intelligence Agency at American Embassies in Israel, Philippines, and Australia.
As my Air Force career was coming to an end and having lived in some very large cities, we came to realize that there’s no place like home. We moved back to Graceville in 1998 and have enjoyed the small-town atmosphere Graceville provides and being close to family was a big bonus.
I then started my second career with Frito-Lay serving the local area for 23 years. Since my retirement I volunteer at My Father’s Closet and am an active member of Harmony Baptist Mission Church. Retirement has also given me the pleasure to attend my grandkids games and activities and to go hunting with my father-in-law during deer season.
I love my hometown and would like to give back by serving as City Commissioner Group 5. I would appreciate your vote. For questions or concerns call (850) 326-0081.
