Chipley’s Blue Star Marker has stood mostly unnoticed at Florida Department of Transportation. The marker was installed on April 26, 1961 in front of FDOT, but construction caused it to be relocated in the parking lot on April 14, 1977. It’s just 1 of over 3,300 spread out across the United States.
Recently, thanks to the efforts of Chipley Garden Club’s Veterans Affairs Committee Co-Chairs Stacy & Mike Hansen, Florida Department of Transportation, and the City of Chipley, the marker was relocated to a more prominent site – still on Highway 90, but directly in front of Chipley City Hall. A red and white rose bed, an irrigation system, and solar lights were also installed. Plans are for the complete restoration of the Chipley marker on April 2-3, 2025 with a rededication ceremony in the Fall.
The Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker program began in 1945 and honors the men and women who served and will serve in the United States armed forces. Currently, Chipley Garden Club maintains three markers – Chipley, Bonifay and Cottondale. The markers are decorated for military and national holidays.
The Blue Star Marker Program is just one of Chipley Garden Club’s activities. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Club President Gweneth Collins at 850-260-4049. The club meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Washington County Ag Center East Classroom at 10:30AM. Visitors are always welcome.
