Deep Division Among House Democrats Over Cutting US Military Aid to Israel

Posted on July 16, 2026

In a striking display of intraparty fracture, more than 100 House Democrats joined Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) on July 15 in voting for an amendment to strip approximately $3.3 billion in Foreign Military Financing for Israel from a spending bill.

The measure failed 104–314, but the 103 Democratic “yes” votes—including support from some key leaders like Rep. Katherine Clark—signaled a significant shift in party dynamics.

The vote reflected growing progressive and moderate Democratic frustration with Israel’s military operations, particularly in the context of the ongoing Gaza conflict.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other establishment figures opposed the cut, highlighting a rare public split at the top of Democratic leadership.

Supporters of the amendment argued it sends a strong message to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and prioritizes accountability amid high Palestinian casualties. Opponents warned it would undermine a key US ally and embolden adversaries.

The tally underscored how Israel policy has become one of the most divisive issues within the Democratic Party ahead of midterm elections.

While symbolic, the vote has intensified internal debates and could influence future foreign aid packages and primary challenges. Bipartisan support for Israel remains strong overall, but the Democratic erosion is unmistakable.
