Drought Update for Florida Panhandle

Posted on May 23, 2026

Recent rainfall has brought some improvement to drought conditions in parts of Jackson County and the western Panhandle, but drought conditions are still ongoing across much of Florida.

According to the latest update from the Florida Division of Emergency Management, portions of Jackson County improved from “Exceptional Drought” to “Extreme Drought” after some areas received 4–6+ inches of rain over the past two weeks.

However, long-term rainfall deficits dating back to last fall continue to impact rivers, lakes, creeks, soil moisture, and groundwater levels statewide.

What this means for our area:

• Dry conditions and wildfire concerns still remain elevated

• Hot temperatures in the 80s and 90s continue drying vegetation and fuels

• Thunderstorms may bring localized relief, but can also create lightning and gusty winds that increase wildfire risk

• Water conservation measures remain in effect across Florida Water Management Districts

• Elevated wildfire potential is expected to continue through June and possibly into early July

Even though recent rain helped, officials stress that the drought is not over and conditions can still change quickly.

Residents are encouraged to continue practicing caution with outdoor burning, monitor local conditions, and stay weather aware as we move into the summer season.
