Florida Commemorates America’s Semiquincentennial by Honoring George Washington in Washington County (Video)

Posted on April 25, 2026

From Ron DeSantis:

Nobody was more consequential in establishing our nation than George Washington. Today in Chipley, I was proud to unveil a new statue of Washington in the Florida county that bears his name.

We honor Washington as the embodiment of civic virtue, and we will continue working to ensure that future generations embrace America’s founding principles.

Florida is commemorating America’s Semiquincentennial this year by honoring our Founding Fathers in the counties named for them. Today, we unveiled a statue of George Washington in Washington County. Inspired by his example, generations of Americans have carried the torch of freedom—and we strive to do the same.

I was also pleased to announce more festivities to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in Florida. From May 1 through August 1, two 18-wheelers filled with exhibits from the Museum of Florida History will visit all 67 counties on the Florida Freedom Tour. We’re also bringing our state’s history to life through “America 250: A Portrait of Florida,” a new docu-series coming soon.
