Florida Department of Transportation Widening State Road 77 to Four Lanes in Wausau, Florida

Posted on November 3, 2025

The Florida Department of Transportation is widening State Road (S.R.) 77 to four lanes between Rogers Road and Cane Mill Road in Wausau. In October, construction efforts focused on preparation for the permanent roadway and setting up pile driving activities for the Finch Circle bridge.

The first photo shows the foundation for the new travel lanes as part of ongoing roadway widening efforts. The light-colored soil you see here is the road base; a strong, compacted layer that provides stability and support for the asphalt surface to come.

The second photo shows the crane used for pile driving activities being set up near Finch Circle. Pile driving marks one of the first major steps in the bridge-building process, it’s how crews make sure the structure is ready to safely handle the loads above and the forces below.

Upon completion of the project, the segment of S.R. 77 through the Town of Wausau will feature four travel lanes (two in each direction), new sidewalks, and bicycle lanes. Widening this segment will also complete the four-lane expansion of this vital north-south route between U.S. (Business) 98 in Panama City to north of I-10 in Chipley, a total of approximately 45 miles.

Project completion is scheduled for early 2028.

A reminder that the speed limit on S.R. 77 through the construction zone is reduced to 45 mph to accommodate construction activities. Please be alert for construction workers, vehicles, and equipment.
