Around 7:00 p.m., Holmes County Sheriff’s Office deputies met with a complainant who reported she had been battered at her residence on Twin Lakes Drive by her boyfriend, Chris Carter.
While deputies were taking the initial complaint, another call was received stating that Carter was intoxicated and actively firing rounds at the residence.
Deputies immediately responded to the scene, where Carter had barricaded himself inside the home and refused to exit. Additional deputies, along with the HCSO SWAT Team, responded and made multiple attempts to communicate with Carter and convince him to surrender peacefully. Those attempts were unsuccessful.
Numerous canisters of chemical agent were deployed, along with the use of a surveillance robot. After these efforts, Carter eventually surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without further incident.
Several firearms, along with numerous spent shell casings, were collected as evidence.
Chris Carter faces charges of:
• Domestic Violence Battery
• Reckless Discharge of a Firearm
• Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
• Resisting Arrest Without Violence
Carter is also currently on probation out of Alabama for aggravated assault with a firearm.
The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Holmes County EMS and Bonifay Fire Department for staging nearby and standing by during this incident.
As New Year’s Eve continues, HCSO remains busy and fully staffed, reminding everyone to celebrate responsibly and make smart decisions to ensure a safe start to the New Year.
