Holmes County, Florida Sheriff’s Office Arrests Trevon Chancey and Mason Gibson for July 2024 Fentanyl Overdose Death

Posted on December 17, 2025

Holmes County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) announces the arrest of Trevon Chancey and Mason Gibson in connection with a July 2024 fentanyl overdose death.

In July 2024, HCSO deputies responded to a residence on RM Ward Road regarding a possible deceased individual. Upon arrival, deputies noted indicators consistent with a potential fentanyl overdose and requested on-call investigators to respond to the scene.

Several months later, the Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the cause of death as fentanyl toxicity.

Over the following months, HCSO investigators executed multiple search warrants and subpoenas for cell phone data and social media accounts. This investigation revealed text message communications between the victim and suspects Chancey and Gibson, indicating their involvement in supplying fentanyl to the victim.

Arrest warrants were issued for both individuals for Conspiracy to Sell Fentanyl Resulting in Death and Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communication Device.

Once in custody, both Chancey and Gibson provided statements corroborating the text messages and detailing their involvement in providing fentanyl to the victim.

The investigation remains ongoing, and more arrests could be forthcoming. Charges may also be upgraded pending further consultation with the State Attorney’s Office.

Sheriff Tate stated, “These cases take time due to waiting on the Medical Examiner’s report and the information we must obtain from social media accounts and cell phone providers. However, in the end, the necessary evidence was collected to make an arrest and hold those involved accountable. We hope this brings some measure of closure to the victim’s family.”

The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to aggressively pursuing those who traffic dangerous narcotics in our community.
