On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, around 2:30 p.m., Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Walmart in refence to a retail theft.
When deputies arrived, the complainant said that the suspect, later identified at Vernis Newton, Jr., was seen on camera stealing numerous items from Walmart the day prior and was now back at the store.
When deputies saw Newton exiting the store, they attempted to make contact with him, but he fled the area on foot while holding a toddler. After a short foot pursuit, deputies lost sight of Newton and began boloing the area. Newton was located a short time later, still holding the toddler.
Newton then allowed deputies to search his vehicle, and several stolen merchandise items were located.
Newton was arrested and is being charged with Petit Theft, Resisting an Officer Without Violence, and Neglect of a Child.
