Marie Simmons, 86, of Graceville, Florida went home to be with the Lord on March 12, 2026 at Northwest Florida Community Hospital in Chipley, Florida surrounded by her children.
Marie was born on November 13, 1939, in Washington County to Walford and Ethel Sumner. She spent her life in Jackson County and was a faithful member of Salem Methodist Church in Graceville, Florida. Marie will be remembered for her devotion to her family as a loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She is known for the kindness she showed to everyone.
Marie has always been a faithful caregiver with a servant’s heart. From an early age, she cared for her younger siblings. She then worked for years as a CNA. She was a mother and grandmother figure to so many in her community. Unwavering in her faith, she ministered to others serving in various roles within her church. She enjoyed singing and was a lifelong member of her church choir. Marie was an avid reader. She was a wonderful cook, a loyal friend, and always maintained a warm and inviting home.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Johnny B. Simmons; parents: Walford and Ethel Sumner; daughter: Margaret Carnley; brother: CT Sumner.
She is survived by her daughters: Peggy Byrd (Michael) of Graceville, FL, Johnnie Marie Pettis (Robert) of Wausau, FL; siblings: Betty Christmas, Larry Sumner, Ronald Sumner, Donnell Sumner (Leighann), Orby Sumner (Carolyn); grandchildren: Ashley, Jason, JD, Amanda, Jared, Hanna, Megan; 14 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends for visitation from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Obert Funeral Home Chapel. (731 Kirkland Road Chipley, Florida 32428)
Service will be held immediately after at 2:30 PM at Obert Funeral Home Chapel in Chipley, Florida with Rev. Steven Ashbrook officiating. Interment will follow in Wausau Memorial Garden. Obert Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida is directing.
