Made with simple ingredients, these fluffy, cake-like brownies melt in your mouth. They’re similar to a Texas sheet cake. So, not a traditional fudge-like brownie, but equally delicious. Buttermilk helps to keep them super moist. The fudgy chocolate icing on top is wonderful. Have a glass of milk handy to wash a slice down.
Ingredients
- BROWNIE MIXTURE
- 2 sticks butter
- 1 cup boiling water
- 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts or pecans, divided
- BROWNIE ICING
- 1 stick butter
- 4 tablespoons milk
- 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 – 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a baking pan by greasing and flouring a 9x13x2 inch pan (or spray the pan with non-stick spray).
Step 2
Combine 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup of boiling water, and 4 Tbsp cocoa in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil.
Step 3
Mix 2 cups sugar, 2 cups flour, and salt together.
Step 4
Add hot butter mixture to the flour mixture.

Dissolve 1/2 cup buttermilk and 1 tsp baking soda. Add 2 eggs.

Add the buttermilk mixture to the chocolate mixture and mix well.

Mix in 1 cup of chopped nuts.

Pour into the prepared 9×13 baking dish.

Bake for 30 – 35 minutes.
When the cake is done, start to prepare the icing. Prepare the icing by melting butter, milk, and cocoa in a small saucepan. Once combined, whisk in powdered sugar.

Remove from heat and add vanilla extract.

Spread icing over the brownies and sprinkle with the remaining 1/2 cup of chopped nuts. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
