National Weather Service Advises of Possible Extreme Thunderstorms Over Next Days

Posted on May 29, 2025

A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) of Severe Thunderstorms is in place today for the I-75 corridor of Southwest GA and Friday for much of Southeast AL, Southwest GA, and portions of the FL Panhandle.  For the remainder of the region, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) of Severe Thunderstorms is in place through Friday.  Locally heavy rainfall may result in flash flooding today and again on Friday.

Severe Weather:

Today: Showers and thunderstorms will develop this morning into afternoon and move east across the region through this evening.  Isolated damaging wind gusts are the primary threat, especially the I-75 corridor of GA.  A brief tornado cannot be ruled out, especially in the FL Panhandle.  Otherwise, storms will produce frequent lightning and torrential downpours.  A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) of Severe Thunderstorms is in place today for the I-75 corridor of Southwest GA, with a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for the remainder of the region (see the attached severe storm risk graphic).

Friday: More numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop and move from west to east across the region as a cold front approaches.  Isolated damaging wind gusts are the primary threat, especially Southeast AL, Southwest GA, and portions of the FL Panhandle.  Otherwise, storms will produce frequent lightning, torrential downpours, and possibly some small hail.  A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) of Severe Thunderstorms is in place on Friday for much of Southeast AL, Southwest GA, and portions of the FL Panhandle, with a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for the remainder of the region (see the attached severe storm risk graphic).

Heavy Rainfall:

The air mass will be anomalously moist, and with the approaching front, the potential for torrential downpours will continue.  Minor flooding of urban and poor drainage areas has already occured over portions of Southeast AL and Southwest GA in the past few days.  While most locations will receive around 1-2 inches of additional rain from today through Friday, portions of the region have at least a 50% chance of greater than 3 inches of rainfall during this timeframe (attached Heavy Rainfall Threat graphic).  Locally heavy rainfall could result in flash flooding, especially for urban and poor drainage areas, where these higher amounts occur.

This Weekend:

Looking ahead, Saturday and Sunday will be dry and seasonably warm, with a more comfortable air mass in place.
