Every 3 October, fans of the 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls celebrate the cult classic film by sharing memes, lines and memorable scenes – and wearing pink clothes.
On this day every year, Mean Girls fans celebrate the 2004 film, which has accrued cult classic status over the nearly two decades since its release.
Starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert, the high-school comedy’s many iconic lines and unforgettable, oft-referenced scenes have made it an enduring favorite.
Because it is on this date in the movie that Lohan’s character, Cady Heron, is asked by her crush, Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett), what day it is.
Cady herself narrates the exchange. “On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was,” her voiceover reveals to the viewer, before we immediately see her character tell Aaron: “It’s October 3rd.”
In the years since Mean Girls hit cinemas, this drolly repetitive sequence has established itself as a much-loved, memorable film moment.
To commemorate Mean Girls Day, fans of the movie take to social media to share Mean Girls memes and scenes from the picture. Indeed, Lohan herself has been known to celebrate the day; in 2021, for example, the 37-year-old posted a still from the film on Instagram, with the caption: “It’s October 3rd.”
What’s more, Mean Girls lovers tend to mark the day by wearing pink.
