Sony Unveils α1 II Flagship with 60MP Sensor and Revolutionary AI Autofocus

Posted on April 18, 2026

Sony Electronics announced the long-awaited α1 II on Friday, April 18, 2026, positioning the new flagship as the ultimate tool for professional photographers and hybrid video creators. The camera’s groundbreaking 60-megapixel stacked CMOS sensor delivers 30 frames per second blackout-free burst shooting while maintaining full resolution, a leap over the original α1’s 50MP chip.

Engineers integrated an enhanced Bionz XR processor and dedicated AI chip that recognizes and tracks subjects with unprecedented precision, including fast-moving athletes, birds in flight, and even subtle facial expressions in low light down to -6 EV. Video capabilities now include 8K 120fps raw recording internally, addressing demands from high-end filmmakers.

Weighing just 1.3 pounds, the α1 II retains the same weather-sealed magnesium alloy body but adds dual CF express Type B slots and a brighter 9.44-million-dot EVF. Pre-orders begin immediately at $6,499 body-only, with shipments expected in May. Industry analysts predict the launch will intensify competition with Canon and Nikon’s pro mirrorless lines, especially as hybrid creators seek one body for both stills and cinema-grade video. Early hands-on reports from trade show floor testers praise the ergonomic improvements and near-instantaneous subject acquisition.
