This Week is National Drowsy Driving Prevention Week

Posted on November 3, 2025

This week is National Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, a reminder that getting behind the wheel when you’re tired can be just as dangerous as driving impaired.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates drowsy driving causes about 100,000 crashes and more than 70,000 injuries each year.

Before any trip:

• Get a full night’s sleep.

• Plan to stop every 100 miles or two hours.

• If you have trouble focusing or feel your eyelids getting heavy, pull over in a safe location to rest.

Drivers who sleep only three to five hours are not fit to drive. Lack of sleep slows reaction time and affects judgment behind the wheel.

The Florida Department of Transportation maintains rest areas, service plazas, truck comfort stations, and welcome centers across the state to help drivers take a break.
