HCSO Investigating Fatal Accidental Shooting Involving Child
On April 5, 2026, at approximately 8:26 p.m., deputies with the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting on Twin Lakes Drive.
Upon arrival, deputies located a 5-year-old female who had sustained a gunshot wound. Deputies immediately began life-saving measures until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived on scene.
Once EMS arrived, the victim was transported to Doctors Memorial Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim’s 7-year-old sibling was handling a pistol when it was discharged, striking the victim. At the time of the incident, an adult was present inside the residence; however, the circumstances surrounding supervision and access to the firearm remain under investigation. Following the incident, the 7-year-old ran from the residence to a nearby grandparent’s home.
This investigation remains in its early stages and is ongoing. All findings will be submitted to the State Attorney’s Office for review upon completion.
The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this tragic loss.
