Drought Update – National Weather Service Tallahassee
The latest Drought Information Statement shows that drought conditions continue to worsen across Southeast Alabama, Southwest Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle & Big Bend.
What we’re seeing:
• Exceptional drought is expanding across the area
• Rivers and streams remain at very low levels
• Lakes and ponds are extremely low — some are dry
• Surface and groundwater levels are especially low for early April
Agricultural Impacts:
• Planting season is beginning, but low groundwater levels are a concern
• Increased irrigation demand may place additional stress on the water table
Fire Risk Remains Elevated:
• Drought conditions continue to support high wildfire potential
• Even recent rainfall has not been enough to significantly reduce fire risk
State & Local Response:
• The Governor of Florida has issued a State of Emergency due to drought
• The Northwest Florida Water Management District continues its Water Shortage Warning
While some rain has occurred, long-term drought impacts remain, and conditions may continue to worsen.
We encourage residents to stay informed, conserve water where possible, and remain cautious with any activities that could increase fire risk.
