On August 28, 2026, Holmes County Sheriff’s Office deputies were monitoring traffic in the Leonia community when a deputy observed a U-Haul truck traveling through the area. The truck abruptly turned into a driveway, prompting the deputy to circle back and investigate.
When the deputy returned, the U-Haul was parked with its lights off. The deputy pulled in behind the vehicle and made contact with the driver, identified as Brett Burgess. A records check revealed Burgess’ driver’s license was suspended and that he was currently on probation.
While at the residence, the deputy observed a male on the porch while the home’s security alarm was sounding. The deputy called out to the individual, who was later identified as Anthony McMillian. McMillian immediately fled the area on foot.
A search of the U-Haul resulted in deputies locating a device containing a liquid substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Burgess was placed under arrest.
While deputies were waiting for additional units, a vehicle arrived at the residence. The driver, identified as Chasitie Ash, was reportedly traveling with the U-Haul. Ash provided deputies with several conflicting accounts regarding what had taken place.
Deputies then contacted the homeowner, who stated they did not know any of the individuals involved. The homeowner also provided deputies with Ring camera footage showing McMillian on the porch of the residence.
A nearby neighbor later contacted deputies and stated that McMillian had shown up at his residence asking for a ride. The neighbor told deputies that he gave McMillian a ride to a residence in DeFuniak Springs.
As a result of the investigation, Brett Burgess and Chasitie Ash were arrested and charged accordingly. Warrants are being sought for Anthony McMillian.
This investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may follow.
